Music
not only speaks to people; it often speaks for them. Beneath The
Vigils was composed in 2008 and first performed in 2009 by the Oshawa
Civic Band and the Pipes and Drums of Branch #43 Royal Canadian
Legion. Its purpose was to express a peoples’ compassion towards
the soldiers and the families of those soldiers who make the journey
along the Highway of Heroes; to carry people in thought to those
journeys. The title of the composition reflects the path of that
highway as it winds its way beneath the bridges on which have gathered
the Vigils, the watches of citizens. This piece of music is also
the voice of the highway, for through the lyrics, that highway speaks.
